Sketches from an Antique Shop Art Deco The geometrical forms of triangles, rectangles, squares, circles and trapezoids used as formation elements throughout the history of art, were reflected at their very best in the period between the two world wars, especially in France in a style known as Art Deco. The beauty of chosen materials, varnished surfaces, lovely forms of female figures from the charming Orient and primordial Africa, the beauty of jazz and soul music of African Americans, the skyscrapers raising towards the sky in New York and Chicago, all of these aesthetic forms were present in a time when it seems that the first war was the war to end all wars. Amongst others luxurious department stores in Paris and London exhibited interesting pieces of furniture, porcelain and ceramics; for those with a spoiled taste they were signed by famous celebrities names like Jean Dunand, Pierre Legrain, Charlotte Chaucet, who were inspired by decorations previously known in Egypt, Africa, Japan and Mexico. Visitors were attracted by the table with clean geometrical lines that spoke of its first class aesthetic design through simplicity itself. Karin Košak |
